While Philip battled with colon cancer for eight years he tirelessly focused on producing four more photography books in which he outlined and condemned the perfidious nature of war.

In one scene before Philip died he encouraged his dear friend Don McCullin to have hope. “Someday”, said Philip, “people will take your hand and say thank you for your pictures because that’s what matters…real pictures of real people.”

Philip worked on his book, Recollections, like a strict but loving father. It has just now been published by Trolley Books, (London).

This intimate tribute to Philip Jones Griffiths was made after his death on March 19, 2008 in order to show appreciation for the memories of love and laughter with his family, friends, and collegues. (The original piece is 30min)

We used snapshots as well as Philip’s immortal images from the Vietnam war to create a living portrait of a man who was Rebel to the core. We interviewed a handful of stellar individuals who knew him well and weren’t shy about sharing their opinions.

Seen through the eyes of people who clearly adore him as the life flow was ebbing away, we are left with the image of a robust survivor – a man who could never say "die".
